The Rossoneri were struck with more injury woes, as Abate ruled out. Still, Allegri fielded a 4-3-1-2, with Abbiati in goal behind Antonini, Thiago Silva, Yepes, and Bonera who played RB instead of the injured Abate. In midfield, Van Bommel started once more, alongside Ambrosini and young Alexander Merkel, whilst a familiar 3 of Robinho, Cassano and Ibrahimovic formed the attack.

Mark Peter Gertuda Andreas van Bommel
Full name Mark Peter Gertruda Andreas van Bommel
Date of birth 22 April 1977 (1977-04-22)
Place of birth Maasbracht, Netherlands
Height 1.87 m (6 ft 1 1⁄2 in)

Mark van Bommel started his amateur career at local club RKVV Maasbracht before earning a professional contract with Fortuna Sittard in 1992. His other colleagues at Fortuna at that time who would later join PSV alongside him were Wilfred Bouma and Kevin Hofland.

PSV

Van Bommel was signed by PSV in 1999 where he formed a midfield partnership with Swiss international Johann Vogel. He won three Eredivisie titles and two Johan Cruyff Shields with the club. He was also named Dutch Player of the Year in 2001 and 2005.

In his final season with PSV, having assisted the team to the Dutch league title and a Champions League semi-final place, he was expected to join his father-in-law Bert van Marwijk who at the time managed the Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, but van Bommel opted to stay at PSV until the end of the 2004–05 season.

After the Champions League semi-final loss to AC Milan and with the Eredivisie title in PSV's hands at the end of April, he confirmed he would join FC Barcelona in May 2005 after the club won their own domestic league.

Won the Eredivisie title in his first two seasons, skippering PSV to the second of those triumphs and two further titles, the second of which, in 2004/05, was accompanied by victory in the Dutch Cup, a run to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League and his election as Dutch footballer of the year for the second time, after 2001.

Joined Barcelona, where fellow Dutchman Frank Rijkaard was the coach, and helped the Catalan club win the Liga and UEFA Champions League in only his season before leaving for Bayern.

Dropped from the Netherlands team by Marco van Basten in 2005 but recalled for the 2006 FIFA World Cup – his first major tournament after sitting out UEFA EURO 2004 through injury; fell out with Van Basten again and missed UEFA EURO 2008 but restored, with considerable success, by Bert van Marwijk, his father-in-law, for the 2010 World Cup.

Won the Bundesliga/German Cup double with Bayern in 2007/08 then succeeded the retired Oliver Kahn as club captain; celebrated his seventh top-flight title in 11 years as Bayern won the 2009/10 Budesliga, adding the German Cup for good measure.

Appeared in his second UEFA Champions League final but finished on the losing side as Bayern went down 2-0 to FC Internazionale Milano.

Influential ever-present for the Netherlands as they finished runners-up to Spain at the 2010 World Cup; appointed Oranje captain for the start of UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying following Giovanni van Bronckhorst's retirement.

Played regularly for Bayern in the first half of 2010/11 but with his contract entering its final six months, he moved to Milan on a free transfer in January.
Milan

On 25 January 2011, Van Bommel signed a six-month contract with Italian club Milan on a free transfer after terminate his contract with Bayern Munich. He was given the number 4 shirt, and the day after, made his debut in a 2–1 victory against Sampdoria in the 2010–11 Coppa Italia quarter-finals leg.

coppa italia : Pato 2 sampdoria 0

Sampdoria: Da Costa; Volta, Accardi, Zauri, Ziegler; Palombo, Poli (Tissone 65), Mannini (Koman 72), Guberti; Maccarone, Macheda

Milan: Roma; Yepes, Sokratis, Oddo, Antonini (Jankulovski 80); Van Bommel, Emanuelson, Thiago Silva; Merkel; Pato (Ibrahimovic 87), Robinho (Cassano 78)

The Rossoneri lined up in a 4-3-1-2, with 2 players making their Milan debut. Flavio Roma continued in goal, whilst Massimo Oddo and Sorkratis Papastathopoulos came in alongside Yepes and Antonini. In midfield, Thiago Silva continued in the anchoring role, whilst Urby Emmanuelson made his debut at the left of the middle 3, with Van Bommel making his debut alongside him. The front 3 consisted of youngster Alexander Merkel, Robinho, and Pato – meaning a well earned rest for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Milan’s first chance of the game fell to Alexander Merkel. After some wonderful play from new signing Urby Emmanuelson – playing a 1-2 with Robinho – the dutchman managed to find Alexander Merkel with a wonderful layoff, however, Merkel’s shot was pulled slightly wide as he opened up too much whilst taking the shot. An early warning sign for Sampdoria just 5 minutes in, though after all the excellent build up play, the shot was a bit of a let off.

Within 2 minutes, Robinho had the ball in the back of the net, but his goal was ruled out. After a volleyed attempt from Urby Emmanuelson, and a deflection off a Samdoria defender, the ball flew high up in to the air, and as it fell, Robinho latched on to it perfectly, volleying it cinlincally in to the bottom corner of the goal, just inside Da Costa’s far post. It was not to be though, the brazilian was standing in an offside position when the shot was taken, and the goal was correctly ruled out as a result.

Wih a quarter of an hour gone, Milan took the lead. The corner from Robino was played short to Emmanuelson, but the dutchman gave it back to Robinho, who volleyed it in to the box. After a bounce (which Sampdoria failed to cut out) Thiago Silva went up and challenged for the ball, and he managed to flick it on for Alexandre Pato, who volleyed it in to the bottom right corner with a stunning finish to cap off a well worked goal! The lead was a deserved one, Milan were looking fairly comfortable and the attack seemed fluid.

5 minutes later and The Rossoneri doubled their lead! Urby Emmanuelson did well to pick out Pato, but the real magic was yet to come. Receiving the ball from Emmanuelson, Pato managed to bring the ball forward, and use a bit of skill to nutmeg Accardi to get past him, before taking an extra touch or two and emphatically blasting the ball in to the back of the net! A stunning goal, and another sign of Milan’s domination, Pato was really enjoying himself out there!

Sampdoria’s first decent effort of the game from Kiko Macheda (on loan from Manchester United) the 19 year old Italian received the ball around 20 yards out, and powered a shot goalwards, but Roma managed to tip it over the bar relatively trouble free, and the pass to Macheda was slightly behind him making it more difficult, espcially with Papastathopoulos coming to pressurise him from the edge of the box.

The lead was almost cut down to 1 once again shortly after. Picking the ball up on the edge of the box, Macheda ran at the Milan defence, and managed to get a shot out quickly. As a result of it travelling low and fast, Roma only saw the ball late, but despite Macheda’s effort beating him – the Italian’s shot was not on target, going narrowly wide to keep Milan 2 goals ahead with 35 minutes on the clock.

Milan were pressing well all over the filed but it was Sampdoria who came closest to scoring next. After good work from Macheda, Guberti was able to get a shot away, however, his effort was blocked by Mario Yepes. This didn’t stop Sampdoria though – as the ball dropped, Kiko Macheda headed the ball on, and Massimo Maccarone reached and took a shot, but Sokratis Papastathopoulos came in with an excellent block and clearence to deny Sampdoria a goal, good brave defending from the greek.

The Rossoneri had one or two half chances to extend their lead before half time, but Pato’s effort went wide, Robinho only just reached the return ball from Pato in a 1-2 (and so missed) and Alexander’s Merkel wasn’t struck with enough conviction. With 2 players making their debut, and a bit of an injury crisis, you’d be forgiven for thinking Milan would struggle against Sampdoria, but the Rossoneri ended the first half on top, with a deserved 2 goal lead thanks to some exellent goals from Alexandre Pato.

After a mixed start to the second half, Sampdoria scored just 5 minutes in to open up the time again. Massimo Maccarone managed to get by Sokratis Papastathopoulos (however, this took place on the left flank where Luca Antonini should have been convering, Sokratis was just filling in), and played the ball in to the box, where Guberti managed to head the ball past Flavio Roma – who had no chance of saving the header from such a close range – to halve Milan’s lead. It came as something of a shock to Milan given how comfortable the Rossoneri had looked, but Sampdoria crafted the goal well.

Sampdoria were taking charge now, and taking the game to Milan. With 58 minutes on the clock, Kiko Macheda went down in the box claiming a penalty, but the ref correctly ignored Sampdoria’s protests. Milan immediately went down the other end though, culminating in Robinho dribbling in and taking on defenders from the left – the brazilian did well to get his strike on target at the near post, but Da Costa managed to punch it out for a corner.

With 15 minutes to go, the impressive Urby Emmanuelson picked up a knock, however he managed to recover, and that meant moments later that Antonini would be subbed off for the return of Marek Jankulovski moments later. Meanwhile, Antonio Cassano was brought on to make his return to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, coming on for Robinho, still in search of his first goal in a Rossoneri shirt, despite playign well and picking up a few crucial assists in his time at the club already. Alexandre Pato was denied the chance of a hat trick after he was taken off with 5 minutes to go, as Ibrahimovic was brought on to close out the game (in fairness, Pato had been quiet second half)

Despite having a quarter of an hour and more momentum, Sampdoria couldn’t muster up an equaliser – even with the 5 minutes of added time. Cassano almost had a dream return to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, but his effort from 20 yards out was not struck cleanly, and then the game fizzled out, meaning Milan secured their place in the Semi Final against Palermo. In a fairly confident display, Milan were the better side overall, even if Sampdoria shaded the second half, Milan were much better in the first, and thanks to Pato’s 2 great goals, they had their progress to the next round to show for it.

Best Moment: Pato’s second goal

Man of the Match: Pato, simply for winning the game for Milan.

Milan 2 cesena 0

AC Milan moved four points clear at the top of Serie A with a comfortable win over Cesena at the San Siro.

An own goal from Maximiliano Pellegrino just before the interval helped the Rossoneri to all three points with Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealing the win deep in stoppage time.

Cesena tried to make a game of it, but succumbed to their second defeat in Milan in the space of four days to remain inside the bottom three.

Cesena troubled Inter Milan with their positive attitude at the San Siro in midweek and, although they were lacking the suspended Emanuele Giaccherini, they seemed to have found an equally enterprising replacement for him.

Dominique Malonga was the main threat early on as he grasped the chance given to him by Cesena coach Massimo Ficcadenti.

He almost opened the scoring himself after just three minutes before creating several chances for his team mates.

Ezequiel Schelotto also went close as Cesena made a bright start. He pounced on a weak backpass from Luca Antonini, but shot straight at Christian Abbiati from a tight angle.

Having weathered an unexpected early storm, Milan started to attack themselves with Robinho and Antonio Cassano looking particularly happy with the ball at their feet.

Cassano set up Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the Rossoneri's first chance on the half-hour mark, but Francesco Antonioli thwarted him before Robinho sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Antonini dragged a shot wide of the post in the 33rd minute and Ibrahimovic headed wide at the far post 10 minutes later as Milan came close to scoring.

They did go ahead on the stroke of half-time when another clever pass from Cassano sent Ibrahimovic through, and Pellegrino shot past his own goalkeeper as he attempted to clear the ball before the Swede could shoot.

Milan appeared to take it a little easy in the second half and they were almost punished in the 76th minute when Sokratis Papastathopoulos had to make a clearance just ahead of Erjon Bogdani.

Robinho missed two gilt-edged chances to seal the win before Ibrahimovic wrapped up the points in the third minute of stoppage time.

coppa italia : milan 3 bari 1

Milan Bari, Formazione Ufficiale/Official Line-up
MILAN: Roma; Oddo, Nesta, Yepes, Antonini; Gattuso, Ambrosini, Merkel; Robinho; Ibrahimovic, Cassano
BARI: Padelli; Raggi, Rossi, Glik, Parisi; Alvarez, Pulzetti, Donati, Romero; Kutuzov, Castillo.

As a result of injuries to Abbiati and Amelia – 36 year old Flavio Roma made his Milan debut, behind a bacl 4 of Oddo, Nesta, Yepes and Antonini. In midfield, Gattuso, Ambrosini and Merkel were the 3 behind Robinho – with Cassano and Ibrahimovic starting up front.

The opening 5 minutes showed that were Milan were up front, and the front 3 were linking up well – with Robinho and Cassano playing some excellent build up play involving a backheel from Robinho, And after yet another brilliantly executed flick from the brazilian, Alexander Merkel had a chance to test Padelli in the Bari goal. Ibrahimovic’s acrobatic effort forcing a decent save, but nothing came of the corner.

With a quarter of an hour gone, Antonio Cassano brought down the ball fantastically, and layed it off for Robinho – who fired hard and low across goal, but it was neither here nor there and went out for a goal kick. Moments later, Ibrahimovic shifted insite and fired it goalwards, only for Padelli to make the save once more – and the italian managed to hang on to the ball a fraction of a second before Robinho arrived, to ensure the score remained level.

With 20 minutes on the clock, Milan took the lead. Robinho’s good defensive running meant the brazilian picked up a loose ball from Alvarez – after Alexander forced him to play the ball by pressurizing him near the halfway line, before finding Ibrahimovic wide left. Ibra managaged to dribble in to the box, drop his shoulder to beat a defender by cutting inside, before curling his shot in to the far corner – another excellent finish from the swede.

A few minutes later, Milan’s lead was almost doubled, once again Robinho was instrumental. Robinho picked up the ball, shifted on to his right foor and fired a curling strike at goal. Once again Padelli was up to it, and dived well to keep it out. Flavio Roma’s debut was going smoothly too, he hadn’t been tested once by Bari, despite being 30 minutes in to the game! This spoke volumes about Bari’s seemingly toothless attack.

On the stroke of half time, Milan doubled their lead. After some nice link up play, Ibrahimovic played it wide to Massimo Oddo (who was playing very very well), and the Italian’s cross was met by the head of Cassano, though his header went past the post. However, Robinho picked up the ball, and calmly rolled it in to the path of young Alexander Merkel, who did well to slot the ball in to the back of the net, doubling the Rossoneri’s lead by getting his first goal for the club.

The half ended with a lot of action, as Bari should have pulled one back, however, Alvarez’s headed effort (from around the 6 yard line) somehow managed not to find the back of the net – instead, ending up high and in to the stands, when really, Bari should have pulled a goal back. That was very significant, because it meant – as a result of that miss – that Milan had a comfortable 2-0 lead to go back out to in the second half.

At half time, Massimiliano Allegri decided to take off Gennaro Gattuso – and bring Ignazio Abate on – playing in a right center midfield role (but running wide) probably because Gattuso had picked up a yellow card and might easily have picked up a second and gotten suspended.

5 Minutes in to the first half, and the ball was in the back of Milan’s net, but Bari did not get the goal – Nesta’s unfortunate own goal was ruled out for offside (the bari striker was still interfering with play) – this angered some Bari players, especially due to the fact that Robinho was seemingly offside in the build up to Merkel’s goal just before half time.

Milan were playing fantastic football and thanks to the 2 goal cushion, were perfectly in control. Robinho was working hard and linked up brilliantly with Cassano and Ibrahimovic, the trident were working together excellently in their first game together. Milan had 1 or 2 chances as a result, firstly with an Ibrahimovic backheel to Cassano (who was unfortunately offside) and also, Ibra’s outside of the foot pass to Robinho (who’s shot went narrowly wide – despite deserving a goal for his play)

Robinho ensured safe passage to the quarter finals for Milan with 65 minutes on the clock. Alexander merkel played a good through ball for Robinho (who’s movement was excellent to get in to the position he was in) – who controlled it, and hammered the ball hard and low in to the back of the net to make it 3-0. 3 goals up, Cassano was taken off for Andrea Pirlo, who was returning from a thigh strain sustained in December.

With 71 minutes on the clock, Alexandre Pato came off the bench, and he possibly had something to prove after seeing how well the other 3 forwards had done! Alexander Merkel picked up a slight knock, and so he made way for the Brazilin, but it was not a serious injury.

The next quarter of an hour went by surprisingly quickly – with little action. There was an injury scare, after Andrea Pirlo needed treatment on his knee after a collision just minutes after stepping on the pitch, and despite returning to the pitch, he was forced off the field as a result of that knock, a fairly big blow for the Rossoneri.

The game drew to a close in a fairly boring manner, Bari never really got going and offered little threat to Milan, the Rossoneri’s front 3 linked up exceptionally well and it’s no surprise the game fizzled out after those 3 were interrupted. Milan are comfortably through to the next round against Sampdoria, and the likes of Robinho and Merkel in particular shone – unfortunately, the latter and Andrea Pirlo picked up knocks in the process (more news to follow on those 2 injures)

Best Moment: Ibrahimovic’s goal

Man of the Match: Robinho (Merkel’s a close second, Cassano, Ibra and Oddo could all compete for the 3rd spot in terms of how well they did)

Place of Birth: Bari
Nationality: Italy
Height: 175 cm.
Weight: 81 Kg.

CAREER

Roma At the age of nineteen, Cassano signed with reigning Serie A champions A.S. Roma, for a transfer fee of 60billion Italian lire (about €30 million) His first season produced five goals, and he attracted media attention after openly clashing with coach Fabio Capello after he was left out of a practice match a few days after his international debut. In the 2003 Italian Cup final against A.C. Milan, Cassano was sent off after protesting an official's decision, and he flashed the sign of the horns at the referee while leaving the pitch.

He was omitted from the squad during Roma's tumultuous 2004–05 campaign while Luigi Delneri, Roma's third coach of the season (after Cesare Prandelli and Rudi Völler), was in charge. After Delneri himself resigned during the season, his replacement, Bruno Conti, returned Cassano to the starting lineup, with Cassano captaining the team in the absence of incumbent Francesco Totti, who was serving a five-match suspension.

During the 2005–06 preseason, Cassano was in constant conflict with club management over the renewal of his contract, which was due to expire on June 30, 2006. In January 2006, he acrimoniously parted ways with Roma and signed with Real Madrid. for just €5M.

Real Madrid
Cassano became the second ever Italian player to sign for Real Madrid after former Roma teammate Christian Panucci. His début came on 18 January 2006, in a Spanish Cup match against Real Betis, and scored his first goal just three minutes after entering the match in the second half. However, just four months into his tenure with the club, he began gaining weight due to poor eating habits, which resulted in Madrid fining him for every gram he remained over his playing weight.

On 30 October, Madrid's official website announced that Cassano had been suspended due to his “disrespect” of Capello, who had joined the club at the beginning of 2006–07 season, following a dressing room argument arising from his omission from the team after a game against GimnĂ stic de Tarragona, and was subsequently benched along with David Beckham and Ronaldo. In an interview with a Roman radio station, Cassano said he would "walk all the way back" to rejoin Roma, and indicated his eagerness to make peace with Totti, with whom Cassano had conflicted with before his departure from Roma. However, Cassano remained with Madrid after the January 2007 transfer window had closed, and the rest of his season was cut short by an ankle injury.

In an interview with Spanish radio in July 2007, Real Madrid president RamĂ³n CalderĂ³n described Cassano's attitude as "unsustainable in the last couple of months" and indicated that he would be leaving the club.
Sampdoria

On 13 August 2007, Sampdoria took Cassano on a one-year loan, agreeing to pay €1.2 million of his €4.2 million salary..He was presented to approximately 2,500 fans five days later..In his first press conference, Cassano said that since his first-choice number 18 was already taken by teammate Vladimir Koman, he had instead chosen 99, because 9 plus 9 equals 18.

He made his Sampdoria dĂ©but in the Derby della Lanterna against Genoa on 23 September, in which he was substituted by former Roma teammate Vincenzo Montella in the final minutes of the match. Cassano scored his first league goal upon his return against Atalanta a week later, in a 3–0 victory. He scored in three consecutive games in January, and helped end league leaders Inter Milan's winning league run with a goal in a 1–1 draw. However, Cassano was sent off in a 2–2 draw with Torino FC on 2 March 2008, which he compounded by hurling his shirt at the referee as he left the pitch,.and was punished with a five-match ban. Sampdoria ended the season with a UEFA Cup berth, while Cassano was acquired on a permanent basis by the club on a undisclosed fees from Madrid..

In his second season, Cassano confirmed to have temperamentally improved, also becoming vice-captain for the team behind Angelo Palombo. After the January signing of Giampaolo Pazzini from ACF Fiorentina, Cassano managed to form a fruitful striking partnership with the former viola forward, that was praised by both media and Sampdoria supporters, and led club chairman Riccardo Garrone to compare it with striking duo of Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini that led Sampdoria to win their only scudetto to date,. an opinion that was later shared also by both Vialli and Mancini..

His third season with Sampdoria again began very well for Cassano, who affirmed himself as a valid assist-man for Pazzini, and being instrumental in the club's impressive seasonal start, that led them up to first place after a 1-0 home win to Inter. However, a result crisis, including a 3-0 defeat in the local derby against crosstown rivals Genoa, left Sampdoria down to mid-table on January, leading head coach Luigi Delneri to put Cassano off the team for "technical and tactical reasons", casting doubts about the player's future at the club.

In the final days of the transfer window, he was linked with a move on loan to Fiorentina, that was however denied with an official statement from the club, but was described by the media as Cassano's own refusal to leave Sampdoria. This was confirmed by Cassano himself through an official statement published on Sampdoria's website, citing his relationship with club chairman Riccardo Garrone, his teammates and the team supporters as the main reason for his choice.

On October 2010 Cassano was excluded from the first team squad with immediate effect after he had a heated row with chairman Riccardo Garrone following the player's refusal to attend an award ceremony. Following such events, Sampdoria formally applied for a contract termination to a league arbitration panel, a position that was confirmed even after Cassano apologised to Garrone and the club.[18] On December 16, the arbitration panel ordered Sampdoria to reinclude Cassano into the first team from 1 January 2011, rejecting the blucerchiati's request for a contract termination, but also concluding Cassano will be paid only 50% of his salary for the remainder of his contract.

Milan
On 20 December 2010, it was reported that Milan, Sampdoria and the player agreed the installment plan to pay €5 million to Real Madrid which was indicated in Cassano's buy-out clause when he left the Spanish club. The agreement involved Sampdoria and Milan paying €2.5 million each to Real Madrid. Cassano then signed a three-and-a-half year contract with Milan,[20] which was later confirmed by Milan's owner Silvio Berlusconi.

DINHO TO FLAMENGO
RONALDINHO is officially an ex-Milan player as he has joined Flamengo on Tuesday.

After long days of negotiations, an agreement has been reached and Ronaldinho has left Milan to join Flamengo and with it, end his European career.

He joined Paris Saint-Germain from Gremio in 2001. After two seasons, he moved to Spanish giants FC Barcelona, where he had become one of the most known players in the world.

After winning almost everything with Barcelona and Brazil, Dinho arrived in Milan. His first year was frustrating for him, but he shined under Leonardo. After a half of the current season R80 decided to go home following the departure of Leonardo.

Ronaldinho is clearly one of the best players of the last decade, maybe even the best. He has won plenty of titles including FIFA Player of the Year twice and the Ballon d’Or in 2005. He won the Golden Foot Award for his career achievements in 2009.

Flamengo President Patricia Amorim announced on his arrival: “We have the pleasure of announcing the presence of Ronaldinho for the next four years.”

Milan will get 3 million for the player, who will earn €130,000-a-week wage.
We wish Ronaldinho all the best and good luck in the future!

ONYEWU TO TWENTE
OGUCHI ONYEWU has been sent to the Netherlands on a six-month loan deal.

Eredivisie Champions have announced on the arrival of Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu on loan today through their official website.

The American giant (1.93 meters) has failed to make any impact on the Rossoneri during the time he spent with them, making only one official appearance, in the UCL against FC Zurich.

Onyewu will be reunited with the man who coached him at Standard Liège, from where he came to Italy, and he hoes to play some regular football again.

Michel Preud’homme would welcome the USA international. Gooch could have his debut next week when Twente take on Heracles Almelo.

Rodrigo Ely is officially a Milan player
RODRIGO ELY has finally received an EU-passport and can join the Primavera.

The strong Brazilian center back has already agreed his terms with Milan last February but has waited long enough to become a Milan player.

The 17-year-old has obtained an EU-passport today and has officially become a Rossonero.

The former Gremio man would be a great addition to the squad of the Primavera, coached by Giovanni Stroppa, as they are competing for the title as well as the Italian Cup, which they won last year.

Ely, who is considered the heir of Milan’s Thiago Silva, will have a tough competition for a place in the eleven of Stroppa as Michelangelo Albertazzi and Nicola Pasini usually start the games.

Cagliari 0 - Milan 1

Cagliari: Agazzi, Astori, Canini, Agostini, Pisano, Conti, Cossu, Lazzari (Biondini 48), Nainggolan, Nene, Matri (Acquafresca 84).

AC Milan: Abbiati, Thiago Silva, Bonera, Antonini, Abate, Seedorf, Merkel (Cassano 74), Ambrosini, Gattuso (Strasser 58), Robinho, Pato.

Substitute Sidney Strasser netted his first professional goal five minutes from time at Cagliari to move AC Milan provisionally five points clear at the Serie A summit.

The 20-year-old Sierra Leone midfielder, a second-half replacement for Gennaro Gattuso, slotted home a late winner after fine work from new signing Antonio Cassano.

The result extended the Rossoneri's advantage at the top to five points over second-placed Lazio, although third-spotted Napoli can close that gap by winning at Inter Milan this evening.

The league leaders were made hard to work for their win today, with goalkeeper Michael Agazzi pulling off a brilliant fingertip save to keep out an early Robinho effort.

But the visitors did not have it all their own way and nearly fell behind just after the half-hour, when Michele Canini headed a corner against the post for 15th-placed Cagliari.

Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati then punched away a bullet 30-yard attempt from Andrea Lazzari as the teams went in at the break goalless.

Abbiati almost gifted the hosts the opener five minutes after the restart with a poor clearance which went straight to Nene, but he wasted his golden opportunity by firing over.

Robinho passed up another chance midway through the second half after latching onto Alexandre Pato's pass, failing to test Agazzi.

Cagliari too were not settling for a point and Abbiati did well two minutes later to keep out a drilled left-footed effort from Alessandro Matri.

But when the deadlock was finally broken it was the visiting fans who were cheering, Strasser beating the offside trap and slotting home from Cassano's pass.
